The Boston Red Sox fell to the Minnesota Twins on the road last night 5-4 after ten innings. 

Garrett Whitlock started on the mound for the Sox, allowing four runs on eight hits in seven innings of work.  Sonny Gray went five innings for Minnesota, allowing six hits and three runs. 

Boston grabbed a run in the opening frame after Rafael Devers golfed a low fastball to the top of the center field wall.  Justin Turner came in to score, making it 1-0. 

The Twins would respond in the bottom of the second when Max Kepler singled, sending home Byron Buxton, who had doubled on the previous at bat.  Later in the inning, former Red Sox catcher Christain Vazquez put the home team 2-1 in front with an RBI base hit.

Justin Turner leveled things at two in the top of the third with his 11th homer of the season. 

Edouard Julien opened the bottom of the third with a double.  He would move to third on a sacrifice fly and score on a fielder’s choice, putting Minnesota in front 3-2. 

Turner stayed hot in the top of the 5th with a single to center field, scoring Alex Verdugo and again tying things up, this time at three. 

The Twins continued to answer offensively, going back in front 4-3 via a solo homer from Kepler in the sixth.

In the bottom of the 8th, Boston got the run they needed to send the game to extras.  Masataka Yoshida walked with one out and was pinch-ran for by David Hamilton.  Hamilton stole second base on the following at-bat, which set up Triston Casas for an RBI double.

Two scoreless innings later, Minnesota walked it off with a Kyle Farmer single, driving home Willi Castro for the victory.  

With the win, Minnesota moves to 37-38 on the year.  Despite their losing record, they remain in first place atop the American League Central.

The Red Sox fall to 39-36 and are dead last in the AL East.

Boston and Minnesota will close out a four-game series today at 1:10 p.m.
