Police say Larry DiPietro, 75, of Augusta, slowed his vehicle and attempted to illegally enter the highway divider leading to a multi-car crash.

From the Maine State Police:

On Monday, July 3, 2023, at approximately 11:45 am, Troopers responded to the report of a multiple vehicle crash on I-95 northbound, mile 146 in Pittsfield. Upon investigation it was determined that 75-year-old Larry DiPietro of Augusta had slowed his gray 2005 Hyundai and attempted to illegally enter the highway divider (crossover), from the driving lane. DiPietro’s action caused a three vehicle collision as the vehicles attempted to avoid him. Two people were transported to the hospital with injuries that are considered minor. Dipietro was charged with Driving to Endanger. He was not injured. Traffic delays were minor due to a single lane closure.

The Maine State Police would like to remind drivers that using crossovers is not permitted for any reason whatsoever. It is illegal and highly dangerous to everyone driving on the interstate. We ask that people drive responsibly for the safety of all motorists.
