‘Smishing’ Text Scam Warning from MTA

  • Post category:Local / News

The Maine Turnpike Authority says some people have received scam text messages requesting payment for tolls.

“Smishing” is a social engineering attack that uses fake mobile text messages to trick people into downloading malware, sharing sensitive information or sending money to cybercriminals.

The MTA does not send text messages requesting toll payments. If you receive a text message requesting payment for a toll, do not respond to it or click any links.

If you are unsure, you may check your account online at ezpassmaineturnpike.com or call Customer Service Center, Monday through Friday between 8:00 AM and 6:00 PM.

More guidance is available from the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center.
