The Maine CDC says the first recorded case and death from Powassan virus in Maine this year is a Sagadahoc County resident. Maine has only recorded 15 cases of the Powassan virus since 2015.
The adult victim developed neurologic symptoms and died in the hospital.
People can be infected through the bite of an infected deer tick or woodchuck tick.
