Gardiner Area High School is enforcing a new temporary policy to only display the American flag. The policy comes after a recent incident in which students displayed flags inside the school with competing political and social messages.
The new rules includes a temporary ban on wearing a flag as a cape or affixing a flag to clothing or school walls.
According to WGME, MSAD 11 Superintendent Patricia Hopkins said:
I am disappointed that this situation transpired, necessitating this temporary policy change. However, this new restriction is necessary in order to protect student safety, which will always be my, and MSAD 11’s, top priority.
Leaders at the high school in Gardiner say an incident prompted them to change policies right at the start of Pride Month to only allow the American flag in school.
