Mosquitoes Test Positive for Virus in York County

It’s the first time since 2019 that mosquitoes in Maine have tested positive for Jamestown Canyon virus. The Maine Center for Disease Control reports the mosquito-borne illnesses was discovered during testing in Wells in York County.

However, there are currently no known human cases of Jamestown Canyon virus in Maine.

According to the Maine CDC concerning the Jamestown Canyon virus:

Initial signs and symptoms include fever, muscle aches, fatigue, dizziness, and headache. About half of the reported infections result in hospitalization. It is not known how many people do not show signs or symptoms. (Illnesses) can be severe and cause encephalitis (brain swelling). Signs and symptoms in severe illness can include fever, headache, altered mental status, seizures, tremors, disorientation, vision loss, and coma.
