Dexter Holds On For a Region Title

Dexter was in firm control of the Class C North Region Championship after Lexi Vafiades made it 2-0 Tigers with just over four minutes left in the game. However, Foxcroft Academy was finally able to crack the goose egg with a Jenna Hartford goal less than a minute later. Hartford looked to be on a break way with just under two minutes left before a whistle gave the ball back to Dexter and they closed out the game 2-1.

Dexter dominated statistically but struggled to put the ball past the Ponies’ goalied Emma Bither. Through three quarters she had 13 saves while her team had failed to get a shot on goal. After Bither made two point blank saves the refs got together and awarded Keira Bennett a penalty shot and she got it passed the outstretched pads of Bither in the third. Bither kept her team in the game where the Ponies were out shot 17-1, 9-0 in the first quarter, and had a 12-1 penalty corner deficit, 6-0 in the first quarter. This was also with the Ponies having three players draw a card and their defense going man down through the first three quarters.

Foxcroft Academy’s lone shot on goal was a goal but they just couldn’t muster enough offense against Dexter. They were also man up for the last two minutes of the game but couldn’t get a shot on goal to find the equalizer in the North Region Championship game.

Dexter won the rubber match after splitting with Foxcroft Academy in the regular season and will play Winthrop for the Class C Field Hockey title in Lewiston on Saturday.
