From Maine State Police:

On Sunday, August 13, 2023, at approximately 2:06 pm, Maine State Police Troopers responded to a two vehicle crash at mile marker 79 northbound on I-95 in Lewiston. There was heavy rain at the time making visibility extremely poor. While enroute to the crash Troopers were advised by dispatch that one of the vehicles had caught on fire. Troopers arrived on scene a short time later and observed one Subaru (vehicle 1) fully engulfed in flames in the break down lane and partially blocking the travel lane. The entire northbound side was shut down and was closed for approximately one hour. The other involved vehicle, also a Subaru, (vehicle 2) had minor damage and was pulled over. After speaking with both parties Troopers learned the female operator of the Subaru (vehicle 1) that was on fire was traveling in the passing lane, lost control in the heavy rain and struck the other Subaru (vehicle 2) in the travel lane. The Subaru (vehicle 1) in the passing lane then struck the median concrete barrier and came to rest in the break down lane and the travel lane. Auburn Fire and Rescue responded and evaluated both parties. No reported injuries to the driver of vehicle 1. The driver of vehicle 2 had minor injuries. She was not transported to the hospital. The crash remains under investigation.
