The first game of the North Region title tripleheader was the only game that wasn’t a rubber match. Belfast beat Cony in their lone regular season match up 4-1. On the season the Rams had only surrendered ten total goals, including those four, while the Lions had only given up seven in 16 games. Belfast had also not been shut out all season but Cony did just that in their 3-0 win.
The Lions opened the game with three straight penalty corners but couldn’t manage to get a shot on goal. Despite a 6-4 penalty corner advantage for the Lions in the first half they only managed to get two shots on goal and both were saved by Avery Maxim. Meanwhile, Cony took advantage of their first quarter penalty corner opportunity after Caroline Hendrickson buried one for the first tally of the game. And Hendrickson led the way for the Rams after picking up an assist to Helen Dineen in the second quarter before she added her 2nd goal in the third to lead the Rams to the 3-0 win in the Class B North Region Championships.
The Rams defense was superb against the undefeated Lions. Despite Belfast finishing with a 13-5 penalty corner advantage they never got a shot to Maxim in the second half and were out shot 6-2 on the game. Captain Mason Freeman did an excellent job against Breanna Shorey, who had a hat trick in the Lions’ 4-1 win against Cony in the regular season. Shorey finished with only one shot on goal.
Belfast finishes the season with only ten total goals in 17 games, but six of them were in their three playoff games. Cony moves on to face Freeport for the Class B North Field Hockey title Saturday in Lewiston.
