Brewer Crushes Skowhegan

After splitting the regular season games predictions were a coin flip in the rubber match for Brewer and Skowhegan. The River Hawks scored the second basket of the game and would never get any closer. The Witches jumped on them immediately with a 14-4 run on their way to a dominant 70-33 win.

Brewer looked to be running at a different gear and put together runs of 14-4, 10-0 and 20-5. Brady Saunders led all scorers with 28 points and nearly outscored Skowhegan every step of the way. After the first quarter it was 10-6 Saunders, 13-13 at half, 23-20 Skowhegan and 33-28 at the end of the game. Brock Flagg was also in double digits with 12 points. Ten different players scored for the Witches with the benches clearing out at the halfway mark in the final quarter.

Skowhegan’s size was their advantage in the game and how they were expected to pull the upset. Colin and Kyle Lepage and Adam Savage had carried the River Hawks to the region final. Against Lawrence they combined for 47 points and 22 rebounds and had 34 points and 20 rebounds against Messo. However, they were limited to 22 points and 12 rebounds on the night. No Skowhegan player hit double figures. Kyle led the team with nine points.

The Witches also used their speed to get to line throughout the game. Both halves Brewer got into the bonus on their way to a 13-22 night from the charity stripe. The River Hawks finished only 5-8 as they couldn’t solve Brewer’s offense or defense.

Brewer will play Falmouth for the state title Friday night.
