Bill Would Tax Streaming Service in Maine

  • Post category:Local / News

Streaming services such as Netflix, Hulu and Max could be looking at a new tax in Maine. The bill LD 1967, has passed the Maine Senate with bipartisan support.

The bill would require any company that uses a town’s poles and wires to transmit their programming to have a franchise agreement.

Opponents stress that the bill would drive up streaming costs for Mainers.

According to WGME, Representative Melanie Sachs (D-Freeport) says the fees would be up to the town to set and that there are protections in place so that subscribers wouldn’t see higher streaming costs.
